Why this page has two sets of numbers
Google Merchant Center is changing its minimum product image resolution in stages, so "the" requirement genuinely depends on the date:
| Date | What applies |
|---|---|
| Now, until ~April 2026 | Current minimum only: 100 × 100px (250 × 250px for apparel). No warnings yet. |
| From ~April 2026 | Merchant Center starts showing warnings for images between the current minimum and 500 × 500px. |
| From January 31, 2027 | The new 500 × 500px minimum is enforced for all product images, replacing the old category-based minimums. |
The practical takeaway: resize toward 500 × 500px or larger now, rather than waiting for enforcement to force a scramble later.
Google Merchant Center image requirements at a glance
| Requirement | Google’s rule |
|---|---|
| Minimum size (upcoming, Jan 31 2027) | 500 × 500px for every product image. |
| Minimum size (current) | 100 × 100px general, 250 × 250px for apparel. |
| Recommended size | Around 1500 × 1500px or larger for best performance across formats. |
| Product framing | The product should fill 75–90% of the image — not cropped too tight, not too small. |
| Maximum size | Up to 64 megapixels or 16MB file size. |
Common reasons a Google Shopping image gets flagged
- Meets today’s minimum but is well under 500 × 500px — will start showing warnings and eventually stop qualifying.
- Product cropped so tight it exceeds ~90% of the frame, or so loose it’s under ~75%.
- A file that exceeds 16MB or 64 megapixels from an unnecessarily high-resolution export.

Frequently asked questions
What is Google Merchant Center’s current minimum image size?
Right now, at least 100 × 100px for most products, or 250 × 250px for apparel. That changes to a single 500 × 500px minimum for all products, enforced from January 31, 2027.
When does the new 500x500px rule start being enforced?
Google begins showing warnings in Merchant Center for images below 500 × 500px starting around April 2026, with full enforcement (images below the minimum are disapproved) from January 31, 2027.
What image size does Google actually recommend?
Around 1500 × 1500px or larger, well above either the current or upcoming minimum, for the best appearance across Google’s shopping surfaces.
How much of the frame should my product fill for Google Shopping?
Google’s guidance is 75% to 90% of the image — enough to show the product clearly without cropping so tight that context or edges are lost.
Should I resize my images now or wait until 2027?
Resize now if you can. Warnings start appearing in Merchant Center around mid-2026, well before enforcement, and it’s easier to fix a product catalog gradually than all at once right before a deadline.
