A. Barcode looks wrong before printing

Common causes: a bad crop, a stretched or distorted label, an entire A4/Letter page shrunk unnecessarily, a low-resolution screenshot, a barcode cut off at the edge, or a source PDF that was already degraded.

Why the whole page shrinking to 4×6 makes barcodes too small

Shrinking an entire Letter or A4 sheet down to 4×6 — instead of cropping out just the label — shrinks everything on the page along with it, including the barcode, so its bars and modules end up physically smaller than they need to be. Use the original label file when possible

Use the original carrier or marketplace PDF instead of a screenshot when you can. Screenshots re-rasterize the label at your screen's resolution, which reduces resolution, rasterizes what was originally vector content, and adds an extra, unnecessary resizing and compression step before the file ever reaches your thermal printer.

B. Barcode looks correct digitally but bad after printing

Common causes: wrong print scaling, thermal darkness set too high or too low, a dirty printhead, streaking, poor-quality thermal label stock, or physical damage from tape, folds, or a package edge.

This is a practical, browser-based decode check — not carrier certification, and not a guarantee that every physical scanner will read the printed label. It works for common 1D symbologies such as Code 128, and for QR codes. An inconclusive result doesn't necessarily mean the barcode is invalid; it usually means the source file, image quality, or barcode symbology couldn't be decoded through this check at all, on either side of the comparison.

Not inherently. Proper proportional resizing — scaling width and height together — is different from distortion, cropping into the barcode's quiet zone, or excessive shrinking. What causes damage is stretching, clipping, raster degradation from repeated re-saving or screenshotting, or incorrect scaling applied at print time.

A carrier-generated label PDF is usually already built at its intended physical size, so printing at Actual Size / 100% and avoiding unintended "Fit to Page" scaling is the safest default. Unusual workflows — custom label stock, non-standard printers — may call for different settings, but this is the right starting point for most standard 4×6 thermal printing.
