- Dirty or dust-covered printhead. One possible cause is that adhesive residue, paper dust, and label-stock coating build up on the printhead over normal use and block heat transfer at that exact spot.
- Debris on the platen roller. The roller that feeds the label past the printhead can pick up residue too, which then transfers unevenly back onto the label.
- Worn or low-quality label stock. Some stock sheds more coating residue than others, causing streaking even on a printer that was recently cleaned.
- A physically damaged printhead element. Least common — one of the tiny heating elements in the printhead has failed and no longer heats at all.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Power off and clean the printhead with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and a lint-free cloth, or a dedicated cleaning pen, following your printer's manual — this is usually a 60-second job.
- Clean the platen roller the same way; it's usually the rubber roller directly opposite the printhead.
